L'ARTE E IL TORCHIO / ART AND THE PRINTING PRESS
VII INTERNATIONAL BIENNIAL OF ENGRAVING – CREMONA ITALY

- 7th INTERNATIONAL SMALL ENGRAVING EXHIBITION
This Exhibition, exclusively on invitation, includes 120 artists coming from about 50 countries all over the world.  The works in exhibition are 240 (maximum size 25 cm x 35 cm), made in recent years, with chalcographic or relief  techniques; the major part of these works will be donated by the artists to join the important collection of original contemporary graphic art already in the collection at the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints at the Museo Civico “Ala Ponzone” of Cremona.

- CANADIAN PRINTMAKERS
This seventh edition of the Biennial sees  Canada as guest country. The Exhibition presents 40 works, some of large format (from “traditional” engraving techniques to the new methods), representing the best of the actual graphic art production realized by twenty among the most important Canadian artists selected by curators Laurence Quetelart (for Quebec) and Derek Michael Besant, artist and teacher to the Alberta College Art & Design, Calgary, both authors of the texts in catalog.

AN ITALIAN PRINTWORKS OF ART : TORCHIO THIENE
In the field of Italian printworks of art, “Torchio Thiene”, directed by Armando Martini, printer and publisher, has  distinguished since the first years '70 in the field of  research and experimentation of  chalcographic engraving, becoming shortly a point of reference for young artists, but more affirmed authors Italian as well as foreigners. The Exhibition presents recent works realized by the artists at this printworks in Thiene, with new techniques developed by the same Martini. Text in catalog of Giovanna Grossato, art critic.

EX LIBRIS – MAN AND HIS ENVIRONMENT
In contemporary, the section dedicated to Ex-libris, organized by A.I.E. (Italian Association Ex-Libris)  and its president, Mauro Mainardi, with the collaboration of the Pro-Loco of Soncino, this year presents  a collection of about 150 small but precious prints inspired by the fundamental themes for our future, those of Ecology and of  man in relation to the environment in which he lives; ex-libris realized by extraordinary Italian and foreign artists, specialized in this particular kind of work.  

To be noted that during the whole period of the exhibition, in the Museo civico in Cremona, a didactic workshop will be set up: on request, brief theoric explanations and practical demonstration on how to make an original print on a chalcographic press will be available to schools and visitors.  The International print exhibition “Art and the Printing Press”, is organized by A.D.A.F.A. (Amici dell'arte-Famiglia artistica) in collaboration with the Municipality of Cremona. 

General curator is Vladimiro Elvieri, assisted by an International scientific committee, composed of eminent personalities in the field of art. Catalogue ADAFA Editions; critical texts by V.Elvieri, S.Tarquinio, D.M.Besant. L.Quetelart, G.Grossato, M.Mainardi.

During the inauguration, on March 27th 2011, at the Civic Museum “Ala Ponzone” of Cremona, the Canadian-French artist Pierre Martin (EGIDE), will make a practical demonstration regarding the technique of burin engraving.

Dino Formaggio

DINO FORMAGGIO (Milan,1914 – Illasi, 2008) is well-known for his numerous publications on the philosophy of art and social science. His interest in philosophy was fostered under the expert direction of Antonio Banfi, he has taught at the University of Pavia, Padua (acting as dean and sub-rector), and Milan.

Professor emeritus at the University of Milan. Awarded Lion d’Or International 1996 in Nimes (France) and in 2004, received the “Ambrogino d’oro” from the Municipality of Milan for cultural merits.

President of the Scientific Committee of the International Biennial of Engraving “L’Arte e il Torchio / Art and the Printing press” Cremona, Italy. The Museum of Contemporary Art in Teolo (Padua), is dedicated to Dino Formaggio.

6th of December 2008 Dino Formaggio died at Illasi (prov. of Verona), where he lived and worked from 1980.

The VI Edition of International Biennal of Engraving “L'Arte e il Torchio / Art and the Printing Press” Cremona 2009, is dedicated to Dino Formaggio (philosopher of art, 1914-2008).
